In demonstration of virtual reality, S.A.students visit foreign lands with cardboard headsets

An excited Schulze Elementary School third grader tore a cardboard headset from her face during a virtual reality demonstration in her classroom Tuesday.

“Ah! There’s a seal coming after me!” she shouted to the other girls at her table, pulling the device back on to watch the animal’s approach in 3D.

Virtual reality is not not just for video games anymore. As the technology becomes less expensive, it’s likely to make its way into classrooms.

This week, Google is demonstrating Expeditions, a virtual reality platform for classroom use, in San Antonio schools. The app can take kids to more than 100 places, from coral reefs to Machu Picchu, from Brazil to the Galapagos Islands. Students don smartphones installed in Google Cardboard, an inexpensive virtual reality headset — and teachers use a tablet computer to control what kids can see. When students turn their heads side to side, or up and down, the 3D picture they see changes in response.
