Alzheimer's disease could be detected years before it takes hold through a new virtual reality (VR) test .

German neuroscientists monitored a range of volunteers as they made their way through a virtual world.

In a world of blue sky, mountains and grass, the volunteers (all aged 18 - 30) were asked to collect everyday objects that littered the virtual space. They then had to return them to the same place later.

By examining the function of certain brain cells during the task, the scientists reckon they can identify those with a higher genetic risk of developing the condition .

The results of the study were published in the journal Science , and the team believe the VR test could help with future research and treatment.
